Scientists learn about CAM therapies every day, but there is still more to learn. This list is meant to be an introduction to what types of CAM are practiced, not an endorsement. Some of the therapies listed below still need more research to prove that they can be helpful. If you have cancer, you should discuss your thoughts about using CAM with your health care provider before using the therapies listed below.

People may use the term "natural," "holistic," "home remedy," or "Eastern Medicine" to refer to CAM. However, experts often use five categories to describe it. These are listed below with examples for each.

Some CAM therapies have undergone careful evaluation and have been found to be generally safe and effective. These include acupuncture, yoga, and meditation to name a few. However, there are others that do not work, may be harmful, or could interact negatively with your medicines.

CAM therapies include a wide variety of botanicals and nutritional products, such as herbal and dietary supplements, and vitamins. These products do not have to be approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) before being sold to the public. Also, a prescription isn't needed to buy them. Therefore, it's up to you to decide what's best for you. Some tips to keep in mind are below.

NCI and the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) are currently sponsoring or cosponsoring clinical trials that test CAM treatments and therapies in people. Some study the effects of complementary approaches used in addition to conventional treatments, and some compare alternative therapies with conventional treatments. You can find a list of all cancer CAM clinical trials here.

Many people believe that products labeled "natural" are always safe and good for them. This is not necessarily true. Herbal medicines do not have to go through the testing that drugs do. Some herbs, such as comfrey and ephedra, can cause serious harm. Some herbs can interact with prescription or over-the-counter medicines.

BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies is an open access journal publishing original peer-reviewed research articles on interventions and resources that complement or replace conventional therapies, with a specific emphasis on research that explores the biological mechanisms of action, as well as their efficacy, safety, costs, patterns of use and/or implementation.

Many natural remedies are available over the counter, but it's important to go over any treatment changes with your care provider, even when it comes to natural remedies. There is more information on the difference between natural therapies and medical treatment here. It's also worth remembering that there is limited scientific research done into these natural remedies for Raynaud's - the results are often speculative and anecdotal. Still, it may be worth trying some out after consultation with your GP or nurse specialist.Gingko Biloba

Ayurveda, a natural system of medicine, originated in India more than 3,000 years ago. The term Ayurveda is derived from the Sanskrit words ayur (life) and veda (science or knowledge). Thus, Ayurveda translates to knowledge of life. Based on the idea that disease is due to an imbalance or stress in a person's consciousness, Ayurveda encourages certain lifestyle interventions and natural therapies to regain a balance between the body, mind, spirit, and the environment.

No alternative therapy is guaranteed to cure depression, but the same can be said about several Western medicines and psychotherapies. To be safe, be sure to consult with your healthcare provider before you try one or more of these recommended therapies:

  • More and more herbal remedies, dietary supplements, and "medical foods" are promoted as memory enhancers or treatments. Some even claim they can delay or prevent Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. A growing body of evidence suggests that eating a healthy diet may lower the risk for cognitive decline and dementia. However, not a single food, beverage, ingredient, vitamin or supplement has been proven to prevent, treat or cure Alzheimer's disease or to benefit cognitive function or brain health. In the United States, "medical food" can legally only refer to a food that treats a condition with a "distinctive nutritional requirement." Alzheimer's does not have such a requirement, so no food can be labeled as a medicinal food for Alzheimer's.Unlike foods and drug products, dietary supplements do not go through the FDA's rigorous review and regulation process. Because of this, consumers cannot be sure that the data, if any, behind claims about a supplement have been thoroughly reviewed and tested. Concerns about alternative therapies

A rigorous, science-based curriculum that will equip you with a natural health perspective. Highly qualified faculty, small class sizes and strong advising programs give you the focused attention you deserve.

Natural health products are vitamins, minerals, herbs and other supplements that you take on a regular basis as a natural medicine in addition to what you get from food. They are sometimes taken in higher amounts than can be obtained through your diet.

Your doctor cannot predict the effect of taking natural health products during cancer treatment. Chemotherapy drugs and radiation therapy attack cancer cells in a variety of ways that are complex and not fully understood. Cancer therapies are developed to maximize damage to the cancer cells while minimizing damage to healthy cells. Natural health products could change this and prevent your treatment from achieving the desired effect, or increase side effects. 041b061a72
