What is Panchlait and What is it About?

Panchlait is a comedy-drama film that tells the story of a small village in North India that has no electricity and lives in darkness. The villagers are engrossed in their own little sorrows and joys, unaware of the modern world. One day, they manage to acquire a gas lamp, also known as a panchlight or a petromax, from a fair. However, they soon realize that none of them knows how to light it up. The only person who can do it is Godhan, an outcast who was falsely accused and banished from the village. The rest of the story revolves around how the villagers overcome their ego and prejudice, and how Godhan helps them light up their lives.

The origin and meaning of Panchlait

The word panchlait is derived from the Hindi words panch (five) and lait (light). It refers to a gas lamp that has five mantles or wicks that produce bright light. It is also known as petromax, which is a brand name of a German company that manufactured such lamps. Petromax lamps were widely used in India before the advent of electricity, especially in rural areas. They were considered a symbol of prestige and honor among the villagers. The short story 'Panchlight' by Phanishwar Nath 'Renu' was published in 1954 in his collection 'Parati Parikatha'. It is considered one of his finest works, as it captures the essence of rural life and culture with humor and realism.

The plot and theme of Panchlait

The plot of Panchlait follows the events that take place in a village called Mahato Tola, where Godhan, a young man who belongs to the Mahato caste, falls in love with Munri, a girl who belongs to the Harijan caste. However, their love is opposed by Munri's mother, who accuses Godhan of singing vulgar songs for her daughter. Godhan is also disliked by the Sarpanch (village head) Naginaa Mahto, who wants him to pay a part of his inheritance to the village fund. Godhan refuses to do so, and is declared an outcast by the village council. He leaves the village with his mother Gulri. Meanwhile, the villagers decide to celebrate Diwali by buying a panchlight from a fair. They pool their money and bring home the lamp with great excitement. However, they soon discover that none of them knows how to light it up. They try various methods, but fail miserably. They also fear that the lamp might be cursed or haunted by evil spirits.
