In the world of war, powerful human empires seek to dominate the land of orcs and goblins that have been subjected to persecution, enslavement, and slaughter. Take charge of the scary orc warriors and the goblin master of stealth through this fantastic role-playing game.

Now just a month from release on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, Of Orcs and Men, the role-playing game jointly realized by Spiders (Realization and Development) and Cyanide (Concept and Production) today reveals more in five new screenshots, recounting an excerpt of the quest of our two heroes: Arkaïl the Orc warrior, and Styx the Goblin!

Arkaïl and Styx's adventure is filled with traps, dangers, and shady characters. While Arkaïl's reputation as the unrivaled warrior isn't to be questioned and Styx' ability to play his cards right no matter the situation is outstanding, the path toward their objective is long and traverses many dangerous territories. The surroundings of the Wall are cutthroat, filled with bandits and the inquisitors hot on their trail. Below the foundations of the Wall lie the menacing catacombs, filled with vermin and savage goblins. They will also have to be wary of the apparent tranquility of the Isle of Laments, haven of The Sisters of Laments, one of the most dangerous mercenary group in the Empire. After all, assassinating the man at the very head of the Empire is no doubt the most dangerous mission the Bloodjaws will ever undertake... and it is this very mission players will lead in October, when the game releases on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC!

From the Wall separating the Empire of Men from the Orc territories to the Isle of Laments, Of Orcs and Men's fantasy universe comes to life thanks to the powerful graphics engine developed by Spiders. The screenshots revealed today are a testimony of the care of Spiders and Cyanide to realize a quality role-playing game endowed with a strong identity, an exceptional ambiance, and unique graphics rendering.

In a world at war, the vast Empire of Men tries to extend its domination over the territories of the Orcs and Goblins, who are systematically persecuted, enslaved and massacred. Through this great role-playing game, lead a fearsome Orc warrior, and a Goblin master of assassination and stealth.

This means that the game is essentially a series of stealth-then-fight setpieces. This would be fine, except it's a terrible stealth game. The patrolling guards walk blindly past their fallen comrades, and it's possible to assassinate an armoured man carrying a halberd within ten paces of half a dozen baddies, without alerting anyone. Nice idea, shame about the execution.

So anyway, Cyanide have managed to deliver a story, and lots of combat. The full focus of this game is on those two pillars of the genre, but the consequence of that is that this is a game without any thing else going on. It feels reductive, and the elements it has been distilled to are lacking the proper potency to give them that RPG kick that we're all looking for. It feels, in some ways, like an "on-rails" RPG. Echoing linear shooters with its lack of anything beyond strict modes of interaction.

It perhaps goes without me concluding, then, that Of Orcs & Men is disappointing. Cyanide could one day be capable of great things, and their tech and art is never in doubt. It is, again and again, design and production quality that troubles me: this game, like so much else from their door, never feels quite right, and overall the game simply lacks the kind of breadth of ideas and things to do that make RPGs worth engaging with. That lack of oversight and ambition leaves us with a fairly hollow game, and one I am not sure many people will feel satisfied with. One day, perhaps, Cyanide will deliver an RPG that we can unreservedly recommend, but now is not that time.

As a gamer who puts a premium on interesting stories and strong characters, I'm willing to be lenient on a lot of things as long as the narrative elements are done well. Of Orcs And Men is exactly the kind of title that hits that soft spot, and what might have been a trashy throwaway became a wonderfully memorable experience.

Also in the mix? The incredibly dark tone of the tale. I can't think of many games where the protagonists have absolutely no qualms about killing others, and frequently decide the fate of innocents (and not-so-innocents) without having any sizable moral dilemma. Throats are frequently slit as a matter-of-fact, people are murdered for who they associate with, backs are stabbed, doubles are crossed and nobody loses sleep over any of it.

The core conceit during gameplay is that the player controls both Arkail and Styx in battle. Pressing a button switches between them, and the AI handles the inactive character when the player is minding the other. While jumping back and forth, it's possible to slow time to a near-stop and skills can be queued up before getting back into the action. It's a fresh take on semi-realtime action that shines when the pair's skills have been unlocked with EXP gain. Setting Styx to armor-break a tough enemy before sending Arkail in with a bone-shattering charge adds a nice hint of strategy to the proceedings. Unfortunately, things don't always go as smoothly as they should.

Otherwise, each level of the game is linear to the point of being a hallway with a branch or two. There are still satisfying sidequests to be had and I didn't mind the lack of exploration since small-scale games are fine with me, but some players might be dismayed at how narrow the world can feel at times. In terms of graphics, the art design is strong but the engine chugs and everything has a loose, slightly janky feeling to it. Triple-A production values these are not, so expectations should be appropriately calibrated.
